Information About the Planet
The planet was discovered soon after a big interplanetary war of XXX century. Restoring after the war, the mankind was especially careful in relations with aliens and different races of the humans. Periods of isolation of some planetary systems resulted in the fact that some human races got quite different appearance, depending on the local conditions - say, there were people 3 meters tall, and people just a bit taller than 1 meter, there were people with different colors of their skin, hair, eyes. There were subtle people with big heads and gorilla-like people with long arms and great strength. And they all were humans.
But also there were humanoid aliens. And - what was important! - the humans discovered some aliens who apparently visited the Earth in the past and whose appearance was reflected in ancient myths

It didn't take long for the explorers to find a village of the locals. They mounted cameras on remote trees and started to collect data. Very soon other villages were spotted. The population in that area wasn't dense; typically distance between villages was several (2 to 5) kilometers, with each village having 50 to 150 inhabitants (as it was estimated).

The villagers lived in small cone-shaped huts. Some huts were empty, but most of them were occupied by 2-3 elves. Again, the intriguing question was - where are male elves? Only females, mostly young, were seen between the huts of the village.

The village had an imposing main building, consisting of several housings connected by roofed passages. One of the housings had a hole in the roof, from which a smoke was rising. Several times a day many, if not all villagers were assembling in the central building. Apparently, they had a tradition to put their clothes on for such assemblies, unlike their behavior between the huts, where the girls didn't mind to get out, make visits to other huts, or simply sunbathe in the nude.

Children also were spotted in the village. They lived in the main building and most used one of the side entrances. Children of the same age kept together in groups, and sometimes they had classes in the open air, hiding from the hot sun in the shadow of the building.

What was the purpose of the assemblies in the main building? Were they religious ceremonies or just meals in a community canteen? What happened inside the main building? Were there any male inhabitants? The explorers had to find answers to these and many other questions. And, of course, the main question remained - are the locals elves or humans?

At that point, it was already totally clear that plans of both exploring companies - MellaPharm and XploreMin - had to be significantly reconsidered. Simple rule "Don't disturb the locals" meant an almost complete cessation of activity for XploreMin with their helicopters, huge trucks, drilling equipment, and so on. Fortunately for MellaPharm, with their light vehicles and handheld equipment, they could continue taking probes and perform analyses of biological and mineral specimens, just avoiding close contacts with the locals. XploreMin could easily move their equipment to the unpopulated area. But what next?

Future possibilities totally depended on what the locals were. Was it an alien civilization or a fraction of human colony lost 7 centuries ago? Alien civilization meant total ban of exploitation of the planet, human colony meant need of significant investments into re-socializing of the "wayward sheep". The Supreme Interplanetary Council of sector G had no funds to invest them immediately, so the decision was to "suppose that the locals are aliens", but to keep the equipment already delivered to the planet "just in case".
